Plans announced for 'Cultural Olympiad' in London

A host of London attractions and events have been lined up for the countdown to the 2012 Olympic games.

Lord Coe, chief of the 2012 programme, unveiled details of the Cultural Olympiad at the National Theatre on London's South Bank, the BBC reports.

Celebrations are planned to take place nationwide during the opening weekend, which will run between September 26th and 28th.

Former Olympics athlete Lord Coe told reporters: "The Cultural Olympiad will leave a legacy of cultural engagement in communities across our country."

Jude Kelly, chair of culture, ceremonies and education for the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, invited "the great artists of the world" to get involved in the activities.

Visitors to the capital can claim National Theatre backstage tours if they hold London passes.

Waves is currently running at the theatre before it begins a stint on Broadway
