Thames River Cruise (London City Cruises) Highlights
Westminster Pier
Show your pass here to receive your 24-hour River Cruise ticket. You’ll see some of London’s most historic landmarks when you hop off at Westminster Pier. This stop is around the corner from the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the Churchill War Rooms, Buckingham Palace, Tate Britain, and much more. It’s also a short walk away from the buzz of Central London’s Soho, Leicester Square and Covent Garden. This is perhaps the most action-packed stop for you to explore on your Thames Riverboat cruise.
London Eye Pier
From this point, you can stroll along London’s famous Southbank and explore London’s cultural heart. From river-side street performers and pop-up street food markets to landmarks such as The British Film Institute and National Theatre, London Eye Pier is a bustling spot to hop on and hop off your River Cruise. Further downriver you will also find Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern.
Tower Pier
Head east and you’ll find Tower Pier, the river cruise’s most popular stop. Here you will find the Tower of London and Tower Bridge in the historic center of the capital. Drift alongside the HMS Belfast, walk into London’s financial city, visit the Monument and the Design Museum, there’s plenty to see here.
Greenwich Pier
Head even further east and you’ll find Greenwich Pier. Take a breather from the hustle and bustle of Central London and explore an area steeped in maritime history. Wander around beautiful Greenwich Park, check out the refurbished Cutty Sark, grab a bite to eat in Greenwich market, and see where GMT starts at the Royal Observatory Greenwich.
Facts
Two-thirds of London’s drinking water comes from the River Thames.
There are over 200 bridges that cross the river. The first bridge was built by the Romans almost 2000 years ago, close to the spot where London Bridge now sits.
The Thames has more than 80 islands including the Isle of Sheppey, Canvey Island and Rose Isle.
Before Sir Joseph Bazalgette built London’s sewer system in 1865, much of the city’s waste was dumped directly into the river. This led to “The Great Stink” and as a result, parliament created a sewer system for London, much of which is still in use today.
