What you'll do
Full of light, colour and movement, the London Transport Museum explores how transport has given the City its unique identity. The collection contains a wealth of heritage vehicles, posters, artworks, photographs, film and video footage, and more.
The London Underground was a pioneering invention - the Metropolitan Railway opened in 1863, was, in fact, the world’s first underground railway. The London Transport Museum explores the story of London and its transport system over the last 200 years. The growth of transport and modern London, its flow of ideas and cultures, owes much to this incredible feat of engineering. As well as exploring the past, the Museum looks at present-day transport developments and concepts for urban transportation in the future.
Facts
The Depot houses over 320,000 items of all types including original works of art used as the Museum’s celebrated poster collection.
The decorative, wrought iron High Street Kensington entrance arch was created in 1900.
Also at the Depot is The London Transport Miniature Railway - a working miniature railway based on real London Underground locomotives, carriages, signals and signs.
