Top Tips for visiting London in the summer

Visiting London in the summer is a whole different city; it comes alive in the summer months - from pop up shops to street festivals, you can see it all. With a wide range of events and entertainment for all ages, London becomes even more vibrant than it usually is. And that’s saying something. Fall under London’s charm this summer and follow our top tips for making the most out of your trip, while staying safe and sensible!

  1. Useful items

First thing’s first, make sure you have packed properly and sensibly. Although London is the capital of England (a country where it supposedly never stops raining) when the sun does come out, it is rather powerful! Light layers are best and don’t forget the sun cream either as it can reach the high 20s in the city centre. As you’ll be on your feet all day, make sure you carry plenty of water to avoid getting sunstroke or dehydrated and make time for plenty of rest stops – London is a big place, you can’t see it all in a day!

  1. Walk instead of tube

To save getting hot and bothered, or even more so in any case, ditch the tube and travel London on foot. Not only will it keep you a lot cooler as old tube trains don’t have modernised air conditionings, but its also better for sightseeing. For example; Leicester Square and Covent Garden are only 100m away from each other but if you take the tube you have to change lines underground and still queue to get above ground when you’re there - missing out on the quaint Long Acre street that takes you from the bustling Leicester Square to the quaint cobbled alleys that make up Covent Garden. Skip the stress, save time and save a bit of energy!

  1. Take in the Thames

One of the most pleasant things to do in London when you come in the summer is a stroll down the Thames. The Southbank is a cultural hub and one of the most popular places in London; home to the National Theatre and the British Film Institute. The Southbank gives off an unmissable ‘holiday’ feel with its beach hut-lined promenade, man-made beach and outdoor restaurants, it’s a great place to go for a break from the closeness of the city centre. Why not try a Thames River Cruise, too? You’re guaranteed breath-taking views over London’s iconic skyline; including Big Ben, the houses of Parliament and even down to the Tower of London and Greenwich.

  1. Enjoy the longer evenings

During British summer time the sun is out in London up to 9pm – and sometimes even later. Make the most of the longer evenings and enjoy the sights of London. Most attractions have longer opening hours to during the summer season, too, so you can plan your itinerary right into nightfall; and then it’s the perfect time to put your feet up for the day and go for a drink in one of London’s plentiful cosmopolitan bars dotted across the city.

  1. Beer gardens and roof terraces galore

Although London is a busy and bustling city there are still beer gardens tucked away behind the back of old pubs and tables that spill on to the street. As soon as the sun is out people pour to their nearest watering hole to quench their thirst – and we’re talking locals as much as tourists! To get something more alternative, why not take your experience up a level onto one of London’s roof terraces. From hip and trendy East London locations, to polished perfection in central London, there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget your camera, there are some great views to be had!
