About the London Transport Museum

The London Underground was a pioneering invention - the Metropolitan Railway opened in 1863, was, in fact, the world’s first underground railway. The London Transport Museum explores the story of London and its transport system over the last 200 years. The growth of transport and modern London, its flow of ideas and cultures, owes much to this incredible feat of engineering. As well as exploring the past, the Museum looks at present-day transport developments and concepts for urban transportation in the future.

London Transport Museum highlights

  • Discover the iconic red London Routemaster bus.
  • See the world's first Underground steam train and the 'padded cell' - one of the first electric locomotives.
  • Discover underground trains dating back to 1890 and learn about their history through the museum’s extensive collections.
  • The galleries are full of interactive exhibits for young people and adults alike, including real buses and trains to play on, and drama characters bring stories alive in an entertaining and informative way.
