I challenged myself to tackle the climb to the top of St Paul’s Cathedral’s dome to find out all you need to know to have a go yourself!

If you’ve ever looked up at the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral and wondered what the view is like from the top, well, I’ve got some good news: it’s absolutely stunning. Bad news? You’ve got to earn it, with 528 steps, a whole lot of determination and, if you want my advice, ideally a decent breakfast first.

I took on the full climb recently and can confirm it’s part sightseeing, part workout, part spiritual journey. But by the time you’re standing at the top of the Golden Gallery with the rooftops of London stretching out below you, you’ll feel like you can conquer anything. Even your inbox when you get back from your trip.

Here’s everything you need to know to take on the St Paul’s Cathedral dome challenge and win.

The views are definitely worth it!

The climb breakdown: 528 steps, 3 levels, zero regrets

Climbing the dome is like levelling up in a very elegant video game. Here’s how it plays out:

1. The Whispering Gallery – 257 steps

This one’s inside the cathedral dome itself. Stand on one side and whisper into the wall - you’ll be heard on the other side, almost 30 metres away. It’s a trippy acoustic trick and a great place for a secret confession or dramatic plot twist reveal. It sounds like a myth, but it really works!

2. The Stone Gallery –  119 more steps, 376 total

Emerging outside, this first external gallery wraps around the base of the dome. From here, you’ll spot some of London’s best bits: Tower Bridge, the Shard, Tate Modern, and you’ll feel the first thrill of being super high up.

3. The Golden Gallery – 152 more steps, 528 steps total

This is it: the summit. Narrow spiral stairs, steep stone steps, a few “are we nearly there yets”, and then boom. A tiny balcony right at the top, 85.4 metres above the floor. The view? Worth every sweaty step.

What you need (and what you don’t)

You need:

  • Comfy shoes - you’ll thank yourself about 200 steps in.

  • A bottle of water, for the stairs - the galleries themselves don’t allow food or drink.

  • A phone or camera for the view at the top - just make sure you hang on tightly!

  • A bit of patience. The stairs can get narrow and busy, but hey, more time to catch your breath.

  • Enough time - it took me about 30-45 minutes to climb and explore all three galleries. Just make sure if you’ve booked onto a tour at a specific time that you factor that in.

You don’t need:

  • A superhuman level of fitness. I’d call myself minimally to moderately active, and I made it, sweaty and out of breath yes, but I did make it. So just pace yourself. But on a serious note, if you have any health concerns or struggle in tight spaces, it might be better to sit this one out.

  • A fear of heights: everything is well closed off at the edge, so you’ll feel totally safe. But, if you do have a really serious fear, maybe stick to the ground floor and wave from below?

When to go

For maximum dome-conquering success, aim for an early visit. The galleries open not long after the cathedral does and the earlier you climb, the fewer crowds you’ll share the stairs with.

Weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends. And trust me, you don’t want to be navigating the spiral staircase in a tourist traffic jam.

Fun facts to impress your climbing companions

  • It’s taller than the Statue of Liberty. Yep. From cathedral floor to the cross on top of the dome, St Paul’s is 111 metres tall. Lady Liberty? A mere 93 metres, including her plinth.

  • You’re not alone. Over 1.5 million people visit St Paul’s every year and many brave the dome, so you’re in good company.

  • That view has seen some history. The dome survived the Blitz during World War II and became a symbol of hope for Londoners.

Bonus challenges for overachievers

Want to take your dome climb to the next level? Try these:

Time your climb – start the stopwatch and see how long it takes you from base to Golden Gallery. If you want to take it really seriously, pause at each level so you can look around without adding precious minutes to your time.

Photo goals

  • Whispering Gallery: sadly this is a no camera/ phone zone.

  • Stone Gallery: a classic skyline snap, bonus points if you frame the Shard.

  • Golden Gallery: the money shot, London in all directions. Maybe even a selfie with the dome lantern.

Spot the tiny people below – look down on the cathedral floor from the dome’s central oculus and wave. It’s a fun reminder of just how far you’ve climbed.

Get ready for a lot of this, seriously.

Ready? Steady… Go!

Climbing the dome isn’t just a challenge, it’s an experience. Equal parts adrenaline rush and awe-fest. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local looking to see your city from a new angle, this is one London adventure that rewards you in every way.

St Paul’s might be a place of quiet reflection, but don’t be fooled, it also knows how to deliver a serious leg day. So go on. Lace up, look up and start climbing into the sky.
