What you'll do
Standing proudly at Hyde Park Corner, Wellington Arch is one of London’s most striking landmarks – and one that’s easy to miss unless you know what’s inside.
Originally designed as a grand entrance to Buckingham Palace, the arch now tells the story of Britain’s victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.
Step inside and explore three floors of exhibitions charting the history of the arch and the Napoleonic Wars, before heading up to the balconies for sweeping views across royal London. It’s a compact visit, but one packed with fascinating details, historic artefacts and some surprisingly great photo opportunities.
Wellington Arch highlights
Battle of Waterloo exhibition
Dive into the story of the Battle of Waterloo, where the Duke of Wellington led his forces to victory over Napoleon, bringing the Napoleonic Wars to an end. The exhibitions include personal artefacts such as a pair of the Duke’s own Wellington boots and the sword he carried into battle — small details that bring the history vividly to life.
Views across London
Make your way up to the balconies for panoramic views across Hyde Park, Green Park and beyond. From here, you can spot the Royal Parks, the King’s back garden at Buckingham Palace, and even the Houses of Parliament in the distance — a brilliant reminder of just how central this landmark really is.
The Quadriga sculpture
Look up to admire the enormous bronze sculpture crowning the arch: the Quadriga, depicting the Angel of Peace riding a four-horse chariot of war. It’s the largest bronze sculpture in Europe, and seeing it up close gives a whole new appreciation for this often-overlooked London icon.
