直到1635年之前，邮政系统仅供国王及其宫廷使用。后来查理一世在英国引入公共邮政服务。当时的规则是寄信人无需付费，而由收信人承担邮资，费用取决于信件骑马运输的距离。如果收信人拒绝支付，就无法领取信件。
邮政系统的低效率反而推动了英国基础设施的发展，为了提升配送速度，修建了六条“主要干道”。直到19世纪，邮费才改为由寄件人预付，并在1840年推出了首枚邮票——“黑便士”。这段悠久的通信历史，正是邮政博物馆所要呈现的内容，也展现了英国最早的“社交网络”。

邮政铁路（Mail Rail）每天运行22小时，持续超过75年，每天运输多达400万封信件。
邮政博物馆是世界上唯一可以看到黑色便士邮票（Penny Black）整张邮票的地方，这种邮票是引发书写革命的世界上第一张邮票。
博物馆里有超过6万件展品。
1868年，皇家邮政正式聘请了3只猫，来负责帮他们抓老鼠。这些“捕鼠员”有6个月的试用期，每周有一先令的津贴。
1963年8月8日，在从格拉斯哥中央车站到伦敦尤斯顿车站的路上，一家皇家邮政列车被盗了将近260万英镑（相当于今天的4600万英镑）。这个事件现在被称为火车大劫案。

Loved it, real gem and not one that you know well
What a little treat this is, it made me feel nostalgic and yearning for older and more simpler times. Let’s get the letters handwritten again is how I left this museum. What a feat to build and run every day as they did. I’m sad this had to stop but delighted it has not been lost fully with the museum operation.

Alexa H ·The estimate of 45 minutes could not be more wrong. I could have spent hours there. The Mail Train was phenomenal. The production value for it was amazing and I loved the entire journey. They don't lie about it being a small train though. The actual museum portion was even better! It was so interactive and I wish we could have spent more time there. We got to make ourselves into stamps and you even got a digital copy of it. Hands down the best thing on our three day pass. Would 100% recommend the Postal Museum!

Interesting Museum
Kristiew1 ·This is an interesting museum made for all ages. It seems to have been relegated to a museum for young kids based on the Mail Rail train ride, which is a ride in the historic tunnels that used to be used to transport the mail. That is a shame since there are all kinds of interesting facts to be learned here. At least the kids do not run wild, as in the London Transport Museum. It is worth a look.
